The Maplewood Senior Bus runs several trips to shopping destinations during the week (Shoprite, Bed bath & Beyond, Home Depot) as well as "Dial-a-Ride" for door-to-door service within Maplewood. You can schedule a ride one day in advance by calling the Maplewood Community Center at (973) 763-5287.

Commuter Jitneys

In addition, all South Orange and Maplewood residents can ride the commuter jitneys as they make the morning and evening routes for the regular rate of $2 per ride. Commuter jitneys follow designated routes to and from the train stations, from approximately 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Please consult the towns' websites for commuter jitney information and schedules.

Essex County Services

For residents 60+, Essex County provides free, handicap accessible transportation for people with Medicare to all towns within the county. Call (973) 618-1280 to register and set up an appointment. Once you are in the system, you can begin scheduling rides. Service is from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The service needs at least 2 days’ notice, but can set up rides up to 14 days in advance.

Private Transportation Options

For medical transport: Bell Medical Transport is a private, local company.

Gold Crown Taxi offers Classic Card Holders a 25% discount on all rides. To book a taxi or get a quote, call (973) 821-5701 and state that you have a Classic Card.

On-Demand Car Service is a growing trend for transportation, such as Uber or Lyft. These require smart phones and can be set up as individual accounts. If you do not have a smart phone, two senior-friendly options are available that will act as the intermediary in finding you a pre-screened driver to take you where ever you need to go:
