Sexually Transmitted Infections, or STIs for short, are infectious diseases that spread from person-to-person through sexual contact.  STIs do not always cause symptoms or may only cause mild symptoms, so it is possible to have an infection and not know it. If you are sexually active, you should talk with your doctor about getting routinely tested for STIs.

All STIs can be treated with medicine and some can be cured entirely. STIs are also preventable. For information about specific STIs visit the Rutgers Infectious Disease Practice page.

Rutgers also offers free HIV testing in Newark. You can also visit the Safer STD Testing website for access to Convenient and Confidential STD/STI Testing Options and Education.
