Bats in Your Home

Bats in Homes

A single bat in your house is rarely cause for alarm, and is usually just a lost or confused bat. In most cases, the bat will try to locate an exit and leave on its own. Assist the bat by opening windows and exterior doors, and closing any doors to adjacent rooms. Turn off lights and ceiling fans. Remain quiet and patient.

If the bat does not leave on its own and you can verify it has not come into contact with any one, you can safely capture the bat and release it outside.

If you cannot verify that nobody has been bitten, please call your local healthcare provider and go to the emergency room to begin treatment. If you are able to trap the bat, please also call the Health Department at (973) 762-8120, x2002.

You can find more information on what to do here.

Wildlife in Your Backyard or Neighborhood

In most situations, the wildlife in the area can peacefully coexist with us, and can even be fun to look at. But sometimes the proximity of wildlife to homes can cause problems.

The most common issues (for example, squirrels in the attic, skunks under the deck, or raccoons rooting through the garbage) can be avoided by implementing a few simple and inexpensive measures:

  • Trim any tree branches that extend over your roof to prevent access by raccoons and squirrels.
  • Store garbage in metal or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. Keep the containers in the garage or shed and put trash out only when it is scheduled for pick up.
  • Screen fireplace chimneys and furnaces as well as attic and dryer vents. (Be sure this is done properly to prevent fire or safety hazards).
  • Ensure that your deck has a barrier underneath it, such as wooden lattice or screen, to prevent animals from entering and making a home.

The WildlifeHelp in New Jersey website is a useful resource for anyone having issues with wild animals, including nuisance wildlife. It is organized by situation as well as species.
