Requirements

1. Possession of a NJ State Registered Environmental Specialist License is required.
2. Bachelor's degree required. 
3. Possession of a valid NJ State driver's license is required.  REHS will have access to a township vehicle.

Skills & Abilities

1. Knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, and other computer programs as needed.
2. Writes correspondence and prepares clear, accurate, informative statistical and other reports.  Supervises the establishment and maintenance of essential records and reports.

Job Duties

1. Responsible for the inspection of and enforcement of public health/ environmental public health regulations within the Township of Maplewood and the Village of South Orange pertaining to restaurants/ retail food establishments, pools, camps, massage businesses, tattoo and body art facilities, kennels, childcare/ preschools, and nuisances that affect the public’s health and quality of life. 
2. Work will consist of indoor and outdoor office work to conduct inspections and respond to complaints.
3. REHS should come to work appropriately dressed to conduct work in various settings. 
4. Responsible for inspecting food trucks and food vendors at one-day events such as farmer's markets and holiday markets. Weekend availability may be required.
5. Plans and directs measures required to abate public health nuisances, including improper garbage storage, standing water conducive to mosquito breeding, unsanitary conditions, hoarding, ragweed and poison ivy, and pest infestations.
6. Respond to cases of animal bites, coordinate with animal control services, and work with the Maplewood Police Department to enforce local animal nuisance/ animal control ordinances.
7. Works in conjunction with other township departments to provide services, especially with Code Enforcement, under the auspice of public health.
8. Participates in planning and conducting special health education and environmental programs. Engages in preventive health education by creating and disseminating educational materials relating to environmental health issues.
9. Participates in Township OEM emergency preparedness and response activities. During emergencies, performs emergency public health functions such as ensuring safe food and water supply, air, water and soil quality and other environmental issues. May participate in interviewing residents or delivering materials to residents during a public health emergency or natural disaster.
10. Responds to restaurant fires, sewage backups, floods, or other emergencies with the fire department. Availability may be required outside of work hours.
11. Files complaint summonses and testifies in Municipal Court as needed.
12. REHS will be required to maintain their active REHS license with continuing professional education and acquire the number of continuing professional education credits to comply with New Jersey Public Health Practice Standards, N.J.A.C. 8:52.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Health Officer.
