Fleet Maintenance Mechanic

DESCRIPTION:

Under direction performs varied mechanical work involved in the repair, maintenance, and servicing of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment working with various machines and hand tools common to the trade; does related work as required.

Must be available to work for prolonged periods and/or overtime during emergencies such as snowstorms and other weather-related events and remain on the job until all repairs have been made.

SALARY RANGE:

The salary range for this position is $48,001.00 - $63,000.00 contingent upon relevant qualifications, experience, and licensure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Repairs engines and components, powertrains, suspension systems, and other mechanical units of such motor vehicles, including special purpose vehicles and associated equipment, automobiles, trucks, street sweepers, buses, loaders, back-hoes, skid-steers, snowplows, spreaders, compressors, and accessories.

Obtains description of mechanical problems from driver of vehicle and/or test drives the vehicle or uses testing equipment such as motor analyzers, spark plug testers, or compression gauges to locate and identify the problem.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Ten (10) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of various types of motor vehicles and be knowledgeable of gasoline and diesel engine systems and their maintenance. Electric and hybrid knowledge is a plus.

LICENSE:

Must posses a clean and valid NJ CDL class B – Class A preferred, or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Must be an ASE certified technician, or diesel/gasoline equivalent preferred. Successful completion of a 2-year technical school with certification is also required.




KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

• Will be required to diagnose basic electrical and mechanical systems, ignition systems, car alarm and radio systems, and engine timing using various testing equipment to determine necessary repairs.

• Will perform preventative maintenance and repairs on engines, transmissions, hydraulic and fuel systems.

• Must be knowledgeable of air brake systems and their controls.

• Must possess the ability to inspect, adjust and replace brakes and components as needed.

• Must be knowledgeable of the operation and repair of hydraulic systems, their controls, and have the ability to fabricate hydraulic lines as required. 

• Must possess the ability to read and comprehend maintenance and parts manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and other written instructions related to the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles and equipment.

• Will be required to keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, scheduling and performing preventive maintenance.

• Must be willing and capable of following instructions given by the foreperson. May be required to operate a snow plow and salting equipment during a snow event.

• Will be required to update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications.
